A definitive beauty shopping list for the USA

Tuesday, 14 October 2014

After my latest LA Haul, I thought it might be interesting to compile a beauty shopping list of the must have purchases to seek out whilst state side. When it comes to beauty products, no matter how many brands and options we have available here in the UK, we always find ourselves lusting after that product that we just can't get our hands on. Perhaps your going on holiday to the US of A some time soon, or might even be planning a trip in the future. What ever the reason for your visit, these are what I consider to be the essentials to pick up and pack. Don't cross the pond home without them!

We all love Sephora. The perfectly laid out displays, the knowledgable staff plus the freebies they stuff inside that little black and white striped bag make us smile from ear to ear. It's like walking straight into Pandora's box, so be warned!

  • Hourglass ambient light palette: This is one of the best facial powder palettes I've ever come across and Ive used each shade an equal amount, which is unusual. Great to finish a look, add radiance and an instant 'I've just had 8 hours sleep' to your complexion. It's kind of like walking around with a candle glowing next to your face. Without the burn, obviously.
  • Bite Beauty: I. Have. No. Words. If you haven't already, you must try out this range. The formulation is soooo good, the pigmentation amazing and the double ended miniatures are so cute and handy for travel - Two lipsticks in one! You can find the miniatures by the till, luring you into a last minute purchase.
  • Fragrance minis: One of my favourite items to pick up in Sephora are the mini roll on fragrances. Each is TSA approved (perfect for airline travel) and there's a whole multitude to choose from. So handy to keep in your handbag, or even to try out a fragrance before committing to a bigger purchase, and great to give as gifts. I'm currently loving the Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs minis.
  • Jose Maran Argan Oil: While the beauty industry seems to be saturated with Argan oil products at the moment, this is one of the first I tried and is still a firm favourite. Organic and 100% chemical free, it's perfect for moisturising after a long haul flight. I like to apple a layer before bed and wake up to seriously thankful skin.

  • Living Proof hair products: Although now available outside of the US, Living Proof hair care is still pretty elusive for us here in the UK. Backed by Jennifer Aniston, this range promises to transform your hair (and let's be honest, who doesn't want Jen Ans hair?!) and to keep your style for longer. My favourite is the style extender - Great for big blowdries and curls. Full review to come, because I am in love.
  • Elizabeth and James Nirvana: Two perfumes. One black, One White. Both in beautiful shiny bottles, and more than a little inspired by Tom Ford, me thinks. Created by every teenage girl who grew up in the 90's favourite style icons - the Olsen twins. I'm actually not somebody that usually enjoys celebrity perfumes, but the Elizabeth and James brand is really quite lovely, and my crush on the Olsen twins has never faded. Both are are distinctly different and smell expensive but my favourite is the white. Worth a sniff.
  • Formula X nail polishes: Im sure we have all heard so much about these nail polishes since their launch, so I won't add to the hysteria. But I will say that in my opinion they create an opaque, glossy colour in just one coat, dry super fast and shine like a gel. Stock up on these. Buy an extra suitcase if you have to.
  • Marc Jacobs under eye illuminator: There are obviously many under eye illuminators on the market and some of my favourites happen to be drug store brands. But there is something about this Marc Jacobs offering that keeps me repurchasing. Just the right amount of coverage, creaminess and illumination, and I love the cooling metal tip.

Now If you've managed to escape Sephora without missing your return flight, I commend you. Award yourself by checking out my final four honourable mentions.

  • Bath and Bodyworks candles: When my friends and family know that I'm going to America, this is one of their most requested items for me to bring back. Look out for the two for $22 offer, and make your home smell like a huge cupcake or giant peach macaron.
  • Maybelline Full & Soft Mascara: Why Maybelline haven't ever launched this mascara on UK soil, I can't tell you. What I can tell you is It's a make up bag staple and leaves your lashes looking full and feeling soft - would you believe it ;)
  • Maybelline Colour Whisper: I adore these. They have a balm like consistency but with incredible colour payoff. My favourite shades are coral ambition and pin up peach. Affordable at around $5 and in a wide range of colours, again I'm unsure why this hasn't launched at home... I'm holding out hope, because I reach for mine daily. Sort it out maybelline!
  • Sonia Kashuk brushes: (available at target) Sonia kashuk brushes at Target have been around for a while now and are still great quality. I particularly like her stippling brush which makes foundation application a breeze and doesn't shed. There are some really great value brush sets in the range. Priced at around $15 each, they are super soft and come in an individual case, making them great for travel.

Luckily, for your wallet and your luggage allowence at least, that's the end of my USA shopping list. If you have perhaps made a state side discovery, please let me know in the comments - my make up bag might need it and sharing is caring after all :) Thanks for reading!
